It’s imperative that all my podiatry instruments are clean and sterilised before I attend an appointment with a client.
Consequently, after each treatment my instruments are first cleaned in an ultrasonic bath of distilled water which releases any trapped skin or dirt particles.
They are then sterilised to 134 degrees in a professional machine known as an autoclave. The instruments are vacuum packed in sterile pouches before spending just under ten minutes in the autoclave.
The pouches have a colour indicator slip which shows me that sterilisation has taken place.
The instruments remain sterile in the sealed pouch until I open them at the next appointment. This way I know there is no risk of cross-contamination or infection.
To reduce the thickness of toe nails and hardened skin I use a vacuum drill with either a metal drill or abrasive disk attachment. Any loose particles are sucked into the machine to prevent them entering the atmosphere. After use, the drill is sterilised and the disks are disposed of.
